4 th Annual Seagrave Wolds Challenge |
|
Report 2008 |
|
The Challenge is growing year on year into a fantastic community event, and this year attracting 558 entrants with over 100 helpers on the actual day, and many more behind the scenes leading up to the event.
Repeated from last year Yeoman Warder Joe David started the event by ringing his hand bell.
Home made food provided by the village residents was plentiful but even this was supplemented by 20 kg of jelly babies, lifting spirits in the final miles.
Following the recent heavy rainfall conditions were very muddy and although the weather was mild and sunny earlier, many walkers ended in gloomy drizzle. This didn't dampen spirits and there was a cheerful atmosphere throughout the route checkpoints and in the Village Hall at the finish.
The route included some interesting changes this year such as the woodland plantation at Burton on the Wolds and access through private farmland approaching Seagrave, although last minute changes had to be made to avoid confrontation with a farmer for using the bridleway over his land, this resulted in a diversion adding a mile to the distance making it a total of 16.8 miles.
Participants took this in their stride, although it meant that some walkers finished in the rain.
Leading the field home was Andrew Fisher in 1.56
